The world sure is a mess., and unfortunately will probably get messier. A new life always does bring hope. One thing that we all most do (particularly in the next 10 months) is stay active. A laissez faire attitude will kill us. Merry Christmas to you, Peter, and a healthy and delightful New Year. Just a suggestion....would love to hear from you about how Europe is reacting to all the unpleasantness and uncertainty invading our planet

Thanks JD - same to you and yes staying active is essential! I can only speak first hand to my experiences here in Spain. People are worried about Trump...worried about how erratic, and crude he is as well as his intentions for Europe and NATO. They LOVE Americans and are bewildered by how someone like Trump can be taken seriously much less elected. There is more solidarity around climate change and taking forward steps...the number of deniers is small. Spanish government is complicated as neither center right or left party has enough to hold a majority and rule and their alliances with the extreme right and left are troubling and lead to conflicts that most of the people would rather avoid...but with that even the most extreme right party here would be moderate in comparison to the current version of the GOP.

The war in Gaza is a contentious issue here as well. The Spanish government has not been an unquestioning ally to Israel and though clearly not supportive of Hamas, have solidarity with the innocents who have been displaced, killed or worse. There is also strong support for Ukraine and little sympathy for Putin. As with everything everywhere, it's complicated!

that was a great summation. I try to read the British newspapers but have to admit I have not been consistent about it. It sounds like the Spanish are as bewildered as I am about Trump potentially being elected. With each day i get sicker and sicker thinking about it. And I fear, and I am probably right, that as long as he is breathing he will never go away. If he loses in November, he won't accept it and lord knows what he will do. Someone help us, please.

Have a wonderful New Years. I'm really happy you started this newsletter again. I always enjoyed reading your thoughts and comments.
